ALPHA STAR PRODUCTIONS - A BRIEF HISTORY

 

Simon Cox  has worked in the TV and film industry for over 20 years and has directed and edited numerous programmes for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. He started as an Assistant Editor with Film Fair where he learnt his craft, cutting over 600 children’s programmes including; Bangers and Mash, Astro Farm, The Gingerbread Man, The Dreamstone, Huxley Pig, The Cabbage Patch Kids, The Wombles, The Herbs, Treasure Island, Molly’s Gang, Tom & Vicky, Rod & Emu and The Koala Brothers etc.

 

He went on to direct the short film, Overload, later screened by Channel 4, and directed 8 episodes of Sky’s documentary series, Stranger Than Fiction. In 2002 Simon edited the BAFTA nominated Cool Keys featuring Jools Holland for the BBC.

 

In 1996, Simon wrote and directed the feature screenplay Written in Blood which was commissioned by Dandelion Distribution. This was shot at Pinewood Studios and has sold well around the world, currently being shown on Sky. The Horror Channel commissioned a 30 minute ‘Making of’ and described Simon as one of the UK’s hottest up and coming film directors. A chapter in the 100,000 selling Guerrilla Film Makers Handbook was also dedicated to the film.

 

Ten years ago Simon left London and relocated to Nuneaton where he set up Alpha Star Productions to provide a shooting and editing service for the West Midlands to complement the work retained from existing clients in London. Over the years he built the company up with major investment in cutting edge HD equipment, the first company in the region to do so. He has produced over 60 corporate videos, as well as countless pop promos, commercials, training and conference videos. In addition he has edited three Screen West Midlands award winning shorts, co-produced three independent feature films, was 2nd Unit Director on Gone Fishing, an Oscar short listed short film and recently was editor and 2nd Unit Cameraman on Charles Dickens’s England with Sir Derek Jacobi. He is also developing an exciting science fiction feature film, Kaleidoscope Man, which is due to go into production in the near future and The Final Reel, an action thriller which is being shot in 2011.

 

Simon has built up a large bank of corporate clients. These include: Sony, Orbit Housing, Warwickshire County Council, HouseMark, Business Link, Citizen Communication, The Pinewood Factory, Accenture, The Negotiation Academy, Shopper-centric, Aquila TV, Corus, Rolls Royce, Fullrange TV, De-Verre Hotels, HSA, British Association of Cosmetic Dentists, Top Banana Communications, Endboard Productions, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, CVOne, Nationwide Energy and Warwick Castle.

 

Simon has recently made two independent DVD productions; Discover Warwickshire and Discover Shakespeare's Stratford Upon Avon. They are being sold in outlets all over Warwicshire and Stratford upon Avon, including Warwick Castle and the Tourist Information Centres throughout the region. He is in production on one more similar DVD about the Cotswolds.

  

He is a member of the West Midlands Producers Forum and regularly supports new filmmaking talent, through mentoring, advice, introductions and equipment support.
